Sports and movies: dialogues - the first Brazilian images

Abstract

In a previous study (Melo, 2003), I have had the opportunity to present an introductory discussion on the presence of sports in the Brazilian cinematography, especially feature films. Continuing that research, this study has the objective of presenting and discussing the first Brazilian shots showing the elements of the beginning of our sports practices. In order to achieve that we will focus on short movies and movie news, two types of motion pictures always present and important at the beginning of the Brazilian cinematography. With this study we intend to continue our work of “social archeology of sports”, discovering the remarkable presence of this important practice.
