Abstract
Making use of citation analysis as a bibliometric technique, the universe of this paper is made up of the 1.171 citations pertaining to the first thesis defended in the Pos- graduate Program in Sciences of Human Movement (PPGCMH) of the School of Physical Education at the Federal University of the Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), during the years 2003 and 2004. These citations supply empirical data that permit the investigation of the current state and research trends of a community, an area or a scientific field. The results obtained thus far provide evidence of the constitution of an interdisciplinary science that uses indicators from disciplines in the sciences as well as the humanities.
