The book as an indicator of the intelectual production in the grand area of health

Abstract
The printed book has had a fundamental role in the formation and diffusion of ideas and knowledge. The university is the space for the book though, until recently, the evaluation policy of funding agencies, Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes) in particular, has given the book, a minor status with pernicious consequences for postgraduate programs and researchers in the field of health whose investigation are oriented by social and human sciences. The present essay reflects upon the nature of the book and its impact as an indicator of intellectual production in the grand area of health.
